Sharon Smith Holley - The Legacy Collection

The Splice of Life • Sharon Smith Holly

My good friend Sharon Smith Holley approached me with a possible project she wanted to shoot at Sol Gate Studios. Not knowing exactly what it would actually turn out to be I said yes. Over the past 10 years, Sharon, with the committee and its volunteers, has collected a great wealth of materials that is stored in the Guild’s basement and offsite. She plans to rotate exhibits each year to provide hands-on insight into the evolution of film editing — the only moviemaking craft originating directly from the film medium itself. She invited some movie editing legends to Sol Gate Studios and I was able to do some behind the scene shots.

Creative Play Date

When I get a new piece of gear or equipment, I usually try out new things or concepts to see what it does. I also make sure I fully understand it’s functionality, what I can do and create with it. I call them creative play dates. Here I was trying out an Elinchrom light modifier and invited a stylist, makeup artist and assistant to do their magic.

LA Fashion Designer Jerry Jacob • ITO

Jerry Jacob is a LA fashion designer who prior to moving to LA had his studio next to Sol Gate Studios. I shot some of the designs of his label ITO for a lookbook. His designs are balanced compositions of dramatic, provocative form and incorporate elements from Japanese street fashion and a variety of movements within the art and music scenes.  Each piece of clothing is designed, cut, and constructed in Los Angeles, CA. Many of his items include fabrics and trims that are specially sourced from Japan. The majority of his designs are one-of-a-kind and limited runs.

Photogrammetry at Sol Gate Studios

Photogrammetry is the process of making reliable measurements from photographs. It has been with us in some form for centuries, and has helped shape our understanding of things like the earth's surface. Today, it plays a vital role in many industries. I was able to document the workflow and set up when a client booked the studio for several setups including agency models.

Spiral Moon Shoot

Spiral Moon Media produces creative video content for startups, large corporations, and individuals. I shot behind the scene pictures when the company booked the studio for a tv commercial.

Short Film Shoot at Sol Gate Studios

Tobi Winder Harbo is a skilled freelance Steadicam Operator based in Los Angeles. He shot one of his projects with actor Brian Casserly at Sol Gate Studios and I was asked to document the shooting and create behind the scene images.

It’s be the story of how they work, what compels them and what challenges them.

Fernando Reyes has evolved from a San Francisco banker to a full-time artist, from a self-taught artist to a formally trained one. His current focus is in abstract art in both paper cutouts and oil painting.

I was able to visit and portrait Fernando at his studio in Oakland. I documented his art and creative process visually.

Project Runway Designer JAKE

Every season of Project Runway had a fashion designer that finished or was studying at the Academy of Arts University in San Francisco. I was lucky enough to shoot two designers (Melissa Fleiss and Jake Wall). For a runway show at Marcy’s I was shooting the show and the collections. Some of the images were later published in various magazines.
